So Karrine Steffans is saying Darius McCrary (aka Eddie Winslow) has allegedly been both physically and emotionally abuse to her for some time. Plus, he supposedly ran her over with his car just the other day. (Yet Steffans had time to text a major gossip website. Go figure.) If it is true, I am sorry to hear about it, abuse of any kind is unacceptable. But what I really want to know is why is this chick considered a celebrity?
Steffans, who is also known by the unbelievable moniker of “Superhead”, became known for her skills behind close doors, not for the talent she displayed to the rest of the world. Yet, she still manages to atttracts a lot of attention. Someone out there is buying her books and I believe a lot of them are sisters. Did they buy Confessions of a Video Vixen because they wanted to hear the sordid details of her sexual encounters with rappers, athletes and other entertainers or because they wanted to pick up her skills? Whatever the reason, folks came back for The Vixen Diaries a few years later. I have even heard the rumor that this woman would get her own dating show ala The Bachelorette (or should I say A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila—another famous person I don’t understand).

Steffans notoriety is a perfect example of how ridiculous our celebrity-obsessed culture has become. Since so many people’s livelihoods are dependant upon the news about celebrity they are looking everywhere for anyone who will qualify as such. And as the years have gone by, those standards have lowered considerably. When the public grew tired of heiress It Girl, Paris Hilton, it raised reality show psuedo-celebrity Lauren Conrad to ridiculous heights. Since our community isn’t interested in our own heiresses (although they do exist), we fixate on the folks that hang around the fringes of fame as well as those who act the fool in reality shows.
So here I am writing a post about Steffans. I didn’t have to, but it gives me a chance to point out our flawed thinking. This, my sisters, needs to stop or young girls are going to start believing that being called by a derogatory name is okay because it leads to fame. All I can do at this moment is invoke the words of Bill Cosby—COME ON PEOPLE!

Hi:
Karrine Steffans became famous because she wrote a book that told us what our favorite male celebrities were really lie in bed.
Period. I don’t know anyone who bought her book to learn her “skills.” She has had her fifteen minutes of fame and made a lot of money. I’d like
to see her do something else (she is still very young) with her life. Perhaps she could take some of that money and go to college. I hope so.

I wish it was just one book but I think book three is due out soon. I do think that woman use her as inspiration because there are too many copycat books out there. It is a bit scary to me that some see her as some sort of role model. It would be nice if she went to school or did something different but she seems to be attached to the persona she’s created.

She became famous because as a soxiety we have become obsessed with other peoples lives and not concerned with our own. Instead of wondering why this woman became famous or why she sprayed all of these artists, we should be concerned with the betterment of our young black men and women. She will continue to do whatever it is that she does no matter if she goes to school or not, which is kind of sad. THe fact that she did these things then put herself and others on blast should tell us all something about her character. She is out to make money at any cost, even if that means giving up her self respect and the respect of her peers, and i truly hope noone out thers is stupid enough to look up to her as a rolemodel.

I recently had a similar conversation about this topic with my cousin, who asked me why is Kim Kardashian considered a celeb? These women put themselves out there and have no shame. I had a girlfriend in college who bought Karrine’s first book just because she was curious. I can’t believe there maybe a third book coming out. For what?!

I think the words star and celebrity have lost their luster now that anybody who stars in a reality show, goes to right parties and stars in ‘leaked’ videos qualify. It would be one thing if that got their 15 minutes and were done, but these women are sticking around way too long.
