If you’ve read my blog before you know that I am not one to watch realit Greg Braxton has an interesting story in the Los Angeles Times about minorities of television, I mean reality television. You see casting directors on so-called unscripted shows actually do try to reflect the cultural, ethnic and lifestyle makeup of America (including not only us, but Asian Americans and gays). Wow, what a novel idea—I wonder why scripted programs find it so hard?
But back to why I should be watching more of these kinds of show (within reason, of course), the articles points out the in competition shows the cast members that survive (or win) become “some of the program’s leading characters.” That was certainly true during Joelle’s run on “The Biggest Loser ” this season. Now that she’s gone it is way less interesting to watch. And speaking of someone who is sure to entertain, I am going to have to watch Lil’ Kim at least once when the new season of “Dancing With The Stars” returns on March 9th. (Lawrence Taylor would be another reason to watch for some and oh yeah, David Alan Grier will be there too).
In the meantime, I’ve missed most of the other Carla on Bravo’s “Top Chef”. But this sister is one of the final four, talk about impressive. (If you’ve been watching please give us the lowdown.)
Then there are the two shows that have just begun their new seasons over at CBS: “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race” which are also offering some people who look like us to root for. Most notably, Taj from SWV and “I Married A Baller” fame whose notariety may prove detrimental in this game of alliances. But she is accompanied by Candace, an attorney whose sick bikini-clad body has been featured in the promos and Jerry, a military man who may have the skills to weather the Tocatins. Finally, there are the Hoffman sisters (LaKisha and Jennifer), who are going to be racing around the world trying to win that prize. Even Donald Trump offers us some surprising contestants in his latest round of “Celebrity Apprentice” which starts its season on March 1st.. This most be the season for musical contestants on all the networks because this NBC show has Brian McKnight (whose also doing a national radio show) and T-Boz of TLC Fame. For the sports lovers you get the freakishly interesting baller Dennis Rodman and football legend Herschel Walker
Braxton points out that the only reality shows that haven’t given us a truly diverse angle are “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” (although there is usual one person of color in the sea of contestants who gets voted off early on). Maybe folks think that we’re content with shows like “The Flavor of Love” and “For the Love of Ray J”, what do you think?
Here’s some video of Carla from “Top Chef” and Taj from “Survivor” as well as a sneak peek of T-Boz on “Celebrity Apprentice”
