When Wendy Williams announced that she was doing a six-week trial run of a daily talk show, I was excited for her. As a native New Yorker I will never forget how she was unceremoniously booted off the air after allegedly calling a certain celebrity’s sexuality into question. But when I saw the first show, I was a little worried for her. The outlandish radio host seemed a bit like a fish out of water. And her hair was acting as a shield because it was difficult to see her face.
But I am happy to say that as the week went on the self-named “Queen of All Media” started to be more in her element. On each successive day, I could see more of her face and her solid interviewing skills. Let’s face it, she’s not afraid to ask the uncomfortable questions. All this is good news because she is allegedly pulling down solid ratings in the four cities that serve as her test market.
The show works best when Wendy is interacting with other folks, especially when she offers solid advice to her audience members about relationships and other life issues. On the day an audience member asked about getting through her multiple miscarriages, the tears streamed down the host’s face were genuine and very revealing. She was also transparent of her birthday show when she talked about her family (most of whom were in the audience).
But some other things need a revamp if she gets picked up. First, the opening sequence could be re-shot to make her look a little less awkward. I don’t know if it looks weird because it has been shot for high definition but it actually looks washed out to me. Her Hot Topics segment can be hit or miss because she has to use the audience as her permanent sidekick. And I agree with Vanessa Williams’ mother who sent in a message that Wendy drink from the mug a little less. Finally, I want her talent bookers to get more aggressive with the guests for the show mix. If there are too many reality stars then it will be that much harder to get some A, B, and C lists acts.
Overall, however, my suggestions are pretty minimal. What will make this show a continuous success is if Wendy Williams excels at being herself. Let’s face it, whether you love her or hate her, there’s no one like her.
P.S. Okay, so obviously this post was written before Wendy had that fateful meeting with Omarosa yesterday. Yet, Williams proved that she’s no pushover even in the face of such foolishness. Can someone tell me why Omarosa is famous in the first place? All she has done is parlay her bad attitude into countless tv appearances.
