Sisters are certainly doing there talk show things these day. Wendy Williams and Mo’Nique have joined the ranks of the already successful juggernauts otherwise known as Tyra Banks and the Queen, Oprah Winfrey. These sisters have our attention during the week but now we also have a weekend option too. Wanda Sykes debuts her new show this weekend on Fox in the time slot that used to be held by “Mad TV’ (EST). Translation: she’s up against the now hot again stalworth, “Saturday Night Live”. Yes I know, that’s tough competition. But Sykes isn’t going up against the big guns with the same old stuff, she’s trying to do a new thing.
According to the Pittsburg Post Gazette her show is probably closer to Bill Maher (or perhaps the weekly equivalent of “The Daily Show”). Sure she wants to make us laugh but this sister is also going to challenge us to think—she’ll be talking about current events. But since it is Saturday night she’ll be serving some libations too. So perhaps we should consider this as a cocktail party with some smart folks in attendance.
Sykes already has a lot on her plate (new wife, twins and a steady gig on “The New Adventures of Old Christine”) but she agreed to do the show in part because she misses the kind of work she did on “The Chris Rock Show”. (Although I doubt very seriously that Biggie Shorty will make an appearance although it would be genius in this context.). She said:
“It won’t be as serious, not as confrontational,” she said. “You want to feel like these people are on the show for a reason, that I enjoy them. It’s like mingling, but they will be opinionated.”
Her first guests are a mixed bag, Darryl “Chill” Mitchell from “Brothers”, Phil Keogh the host of “The Amazing Race” and Mary Lynn Rajskub from “24″ (okay but a little Fox heavy, no?). And the talking won’t be interrupting by a musical guest so a lot depends on Sykes. Based on her stand up style I think she’ll put together something interesting. I refuse to think this will anything like D. L. Hughley’s (or even worse, David Alan Grier’s) unfunny parody of the news.
So if you’re staying on Saturday night give Wanda a try. If you’re out set your VCR, Sykes is going to show the world what another sister adds to the late night conversation and we should show her some support.

I hope her show lasts. Its clever and smart and has a format much like that of the Chris Rock Show. Saturday night is a tough time slot especially with Saturday night live being popular (even though i think its lost a lot of its flair because all the good cast members are gone i.e. maya rudolph). Good luck to her. On the saturdays that I stay in, I’ll tune into her show.
