We're in week two of our countdown of stories that shaped the images of black women in popular culture. We've chosen a dozen stories (the good, the bad and the ridiculous) that captured our attention in 2009. Here's the story that made our hot list today:
#5: RHOA Rules (aka "Sheree Whitfield Foreclosure and Funny Business" originally published June 17, 2009)No matter how you slice it, it’s clear that Sheree Whitfield, one of Bravo’s “Housewives of Atlanta” ,had to get out of the fabulous home she pranced around in the first season of the show. But how it went down sounds like the kind of hot mess the show captured week after week (and will be doing again soon).
The house (or should I say mansion) was actually in her husband’s name only and sold for 1.1 million dollars (less than half of the purchase price) last month. Neither Sheree or her ex-husband get a penny. But here’s where the funny business begins according to a AJC blog .
When Aurora Loan Services took over, they offered cash for keys. In other words, they were willing to pay this sister and her family to get out (as long as she left everything in good shape). She turned them down and the house was gutted soon after (stripped of about
$200K worth of stuff). Sheesh.
Whitfield is pointing the finger at a ‘business consultant’ and acquaintance named Sheila Rashad who supposedly conned her into believing she could help her keep the house then stole the fixtures, furniture and appliances with the help of her husband. But Rashad is saying that she actually was trying to help Sheree leave her home with a measure of dignity. (Obviously that failed miserably). And the she said/she said accusations go on from there.
Who is telling the truth? Frankly it doesn’t matter. All I can say is that when black folks act extra bourgie and still behave badly it just shows that money (or acting like you have money) won’t ever make you truly rich.
Note: Anyone who reads my blog knows I don’t watch RHOA. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t point out how their second season broke ratings records, had real life tragic consequences (with the death of Kandi Burress’ fiancé AJ Jewel ) and more shenanigans than you can shake a stick at which is the real reason this list would not be complete without them.
