It’s been a minute since we heard from soul diva India.Arie. Three years to be exact. Can you believe it? Anyway, since then when it comes to female R&B singers we’ve been bombarded with more flash and fabulosity (okay that’s not a word but you know what I mean) then substance—with a few notable exceptions. But Arie is back to remind us that it that true talent and individuality, as well as some down-to-earth beauty has a place in soul music too. And she’s got platinum sales to prove it.We can say in a way, Arie is the anti-Beyonce when you think of some of her songs like “Video” and “I Am Not My Hair.” With a quiet force she reminded us of society and dare I say some black folk’s unrealistic beauty standards. Since then, others singers like Mary J. Blige have followed suit with the message to sisters that we’re fine as we are.
But although Arie sings about what’s real, and what’s important, her love songs strike a emotional chord with folks too. So I can’t wait to hear all the songs on her new project, Testimony: Volume 2 Love & Politics which drops on February 10th. Based on the first two releases, “Therapy” and “Chocolate High”, which features Musiq Soulchild, it’s time for us to hear (and see) more of her again. I can’t wait.
If you can’t wait either, you can listen to “Therapy and “Chocolate High” here:
