Well. How funny you write about this. I am working on a project to address both access and learned behavior surrounding diet in inner city and poor rural communities. The issue, in many cases is two fold. One, those who have poor eating habits growing up and are themselves overweight, may not necessarily be equipped with the knowledge or information on how to eat heathly. Unlike in previous decades, healthy eating is barely covered in school (ask a kid today what the four food groups are?) and eating habits are passed down generationally.

Second, if you live in the inner city access is a huge issue. Hence the food desert. Not mention that vegetables are prohibitively expensive and neighborhoods where there are full service stores selection and quality is limited. Many owners argue that the demand does not exist therefore they do not provide it. If you have the opportunity to shop in a grocery store in a city neighborhood store, take a look in your neighbors cart during the first of the month. Its astonishing.

You know these so called social workers should have know right to do a thing like this. This is why DHR gets a bad rap, they could have gone about this another way. I am so sick of social workers and some Dr.s thinking they can just walk in and assume that they know what is best for the child. I mean did this kids Dr. even offer any kind of treatment for the child. I'm sure that they just thought they could take him and put him in a fat camp and it would be alright.
There need to be laws made over people like that. Instead of just going out and slapping child neglect charges out for this kind of thing. It's not the mother who was neglecting her kid, its these stuppid idiots out here that do'nt remember obesity is a pandemic.
