There must be something in the water in Detroit, particularly the water that politician’s drink. I am happy to report that the latest political shenanigans have nothing to do with Kwame or Christine. This time it is Council President Pro-Tem, Monica Conyers (wife of John) who got caught up in a messy scandal.
Now you might remember Conyers from her ridiculous exchange with another council member last year (in which she called him Shrek). She then earned the distinction of having been dressed down for her foolishness by a 13 year-old named Kierra Bell. But it seems that Conyers’ unwise choices extended beyond name-calling. This sister pleaded guilty to accepting money in some billion dollar sludge contract scandal. All of a sudden, this outspoken sister doesn’t have much to say. (Getting busted will do that to you, huh?).
Anyway, although Conyers pled guilty to a felony last week, she didn’t immediately resign her post. That is not until yesterday when the State Attorney General basically told her he’d do it for her. Sheesh. Conyers was going to stay on and essentially run the City Council until sentencing (which would have taken up to 90 days). I guess anything goes in Detroit. Now she’ll step down as of July 6th.
This, however, may not be her only questionable (I mean illegal) transaction. Her former chief of staff, Sam Riddle, said Conyers also took money and jewelry for other deals. He didn’t come out and say that her husband knew about her shady ties but Riddle isn’t saying he didn’t.
So my question is this: what does a member of Congress do when his or her spouse is convicted of a felony? Well I am guessing if you’re from Detroit the answer is nothing. (Okay so I am not happy with this bill Conyers has put forth that will unfairly tax minority radio owners). But he should know that they’re probably looking at him next.
