Okay The Popwatch blog over at EW is reporting that Marlon Wayans is in serious talks to portray Richard Pryor. Yes, the same guy who is currently developing “White Chicks 2″ and thought such films as “Dance Flick” and “Little Man: were good ideas. And get this, he aced out Eddie Murphy for the gig (and you know he is not happy about that). All I can say is that I’m silently cringing at the prospect.
But according to the buzz circulating around this flick, I might not have to cringe at all because Keenan’s lil’ brother blew folks away with a solid audition. He also landed a part in the summer blockbuster “GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra”. I never saw the movie so I can’t really weigh in whether he was good or bad acting opposite a CGI screen. But playing Pryor in the biopic requires that he carry the film. Most of his resume is one-note comedy but back in 2000 he did have a part in “Requiem For A Dream” (I didn’t see that either). This leaves me wondering why Marlon has chosen the roles he has if he real has acting chops and not just a funny bone. Perhaps it boils down to what he and his brothers could sell, or it was all about achieving a measure of commercial success before he did what he really wanted.
Let’s just say that I am going to have to reserve judgement until this project is complete. I guess if Mo’Nique can transition from “Phat Girlz” to “Precious” then Marlon deserves a chance to. But I’m still cringing a little bit, I can’t help it.
