In the wee hours this morning, Christine Beatty, dethroned Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s former chief of staff and paramour, was released from jail. She didn’t have a five car caravan like Kwame did, instead her pastor gave her a ride home in his Chrysler Town Car. So besides the pastor, who was there to meet her after Beatty served 70 days in jail besides her family? Don’t expect me to say Kwame Kilpatrick. But a couple of other members of his family were allegedly there: sister Ayana Kilpatrick and cousin Ajene Evans. Beatty’s first order of business was to head home to see her young daughters (she is no longer with their father, Lou Beatty). Then the sister hopes to find a new job. That’s not a bad idea since the City of Detroit seriously wants (and needs) that restitution money. Timing-wise, finding a job in Detroit might be a bit problematic since thousands of text messages between Kilpatrick and Beatty were released last week for all to read (click here if you want to read/download them). This happened in spite of Kilpatrick’s best efforts to squash their release (he filed suit against SkyTel for $100 million).
So now that folks have done their time and have been mortified by the release of the actual text messages, has this whole sorted episode come to its logical conclusion? I would hope so. If Beatty is indeed remorseful and wants to move on with her life who are we to cast stones? If that’s the case, all we can do is wish her and her family luck.
But this whole case started because of lies and massive egos (particularly on Kilpatrick’s part). So he would have to be reasonable and let things go. Based upon his track record—after 99 days in jail he still filed that SkyTel lawsuit—this thing could go on and on. (Hint: The Detroit Free Press actually has a “Text Message Scandal” header which they use frequently). Only time will tell if this drama is indeed over for good.
