Disgraced and dethroned former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick emerged from a Wayne County Jail in the wee hours of the morning today after serving 99 days there. Like other people of note, he stopped just short of serving the entire 120 day sentence. Waiting for him was a throng of press and his new attorney Willie Gary (the brother is known for winning big for his clients).
Okay, so you’d think this would be the end of the story, right? But I have a feeling that this ridiculousness is going to continue at least a little while. My proof: Gary was brought in to see if Kilpatrick has a case against the city of Detroit. He had this to say to The Detroit Free Press this:
“What I’m doing is, we’re just kind of doing some due diligence to make sure that in the process of all of this that there were no violations of his rights,” Gary said.
Rumor is that he is thinking about suing SkyTel, the company through which the Mayor and his former lover and chief of staff, Christine Beatty, leased their PDA’s. Way to deflect from the fact that your lies cost your financially strapped city $9 million. And then there’s the one million dollars that Kilpatrick has agreed to pay in restitution—which may be difficult since he had to give up his law license and agree not to run for an elected office for five years.
But even with all of this, the former Mayor wants everyone to know that he’s not bitter. Really? I wonder if the people of Detroit feel the same way. Given the state of the economy, those folks could really use that $9 million you wasted. I am sure he won’t notice, because he’s off to Florida to be with his wife and kids while the people of Detroit have to survive in the aftermath.
