Unless you’ve been living under a rock you probably already know that Keyshia Cole and Jamie Foxx were adopted. But tonight, they share their stories (and perform) in hopes of helping waiting children find homes of their own for the holidays. And we know that too many of our kids are those who need homes. The special, which is entitled “A Home For The Holidays” airs Tuesday on CBS. The late Dave Thomas, of Wendy’s fame, had the idea for this special—which is an outgrowth of The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption he created in 1992.
Cole told the Associated Press this: “My personal story was my mother was on drugs all my life and she didn’t get a little bit better until I became ‘Keyshia Cole the Celebrity.’ Maybe it was a good way for her to see herself — that your daughter has become so much and she’s become so big.”
I would have to say that her story alone is enough to make you want to tune in to this special. (And to show a little support for her new album “A Different Me.”) But her struggles to reconnect with her biological family (drugs, alcohol, DRAMA) and honor her adoptive family have been well-documented on her BET reality show “Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is.” And that show has become a certifiable hit for BET because viewers are routing for Keyshia and her family warts and all.
Jamie Foxx’s journey is a bit different. ”I was lucky,” said the Oscar-winning Foxx (”Ray”). “I was adopted at 7 months, but the lady who adopted me also adopted my mother, so I had a relationship with my biological parents, also.” Yet I doubt that his upbringing has been a crystal staircase either.
We are going to start thinking about what will become of these children no one wants. Or better yet, whether we have room in our hearts and lives to offer a child a place in it. It’s a shame when celebrities and people of other races seem to be stepping up more than we are.
Just something to consider before you get too wrapped up in your own holiday festivities
