When we think of Jill Scott, most of us probably think about the soulful tunes she belts out that make us want to cuddle up with someone special. But the love between Jill and her former record label has definitely been lost. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Hidden Beach Records has filed suit against Scott for skipping out halfway through their six album deal and they are not happy. She essentially broke up with the label last October.
Apparently, Hidden Beach believes that Scott owes them three more albums and if Scott wants out she is going to have to pay them (perhaps millions). What a mess. According to the paper’s filed, Steve McKeever, the label’s founder gave the singer preferential treatment and agreed to let Scott explore acting opportunities. He even agreed not to release a concert DVD that he spent $450,000 to create after Scott made the request.
Scott is not talking about the lawsuit. Who can blame her? Since she’s come on the scene she’s done a good job of maintaining a modicum of privacy. And as a new mother I suspect she has other things on her mind. From a legal point of view she may have an out because her contract spanned a decade. That’s three years longer than the limit known as the De Havilland Law—which came about after actress Olivia De Havilland fought the now defunct studio system.
While it’s sad to hear about this rift, as a fan what I really want to know is whether this will impact our ability to hear new music from Scott. That won’t make many of us happy at all. While I love the actress side of Scott and actually look forward to Why Did I Get Married Too (yes, I am actually looking forward to something by Tyler Perry) and hopefully a second season of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, I, like many of you, love her music most of all.
