There are about two weeks before Jennifer Hudson’s debut CD hits stores. But yesterday I heard her duet with Fantasia on a another blog. It’s nice to hear these two sisters with powerful lungs work together on a song.
But I have got to say that “I’m His Only Woman” sounds like a throwback to those Betty Wrightish type of jams. Specifically, it conjures up “Woman to Woman” by Shirley Brown (circa 1974). Listen to both and you’ll see what I mean.
Anyway, it made me wonder why Jennifer Hudson would want to sing a song about two women fighting over a man. In 1974, I didn’t know what the woman was talking about it just sounded moody, soulful and awfully adult. But now I know that women bickering over a man is downright juvenile. I haven’t forgotten about “The Boy Is Mine” from Brandy and Monica. (I gave them a pass because they were two young to know how stupid it was).
Even though I am disappointed in the subject matter I am still not hating on Jennifer. She is the kind of songtress we see far too little of in this age of studio wizardry, fluff, and star-making marketing. So I am still eagerly anticipating her CD. But right now I will be singing along to “Spotlight” instead of “I’m His Only Woman.”
