Just in time for the Olympics ESPN is reporting that Marion Jones wants a pardon from President Bush. Or at the very least, she wants her sentence commuted because she tested positive for performance enhancing drugs and participated in check fraud. Once dubbed the fastest woman in the world, this sister put every record she held in question. She also spread a bit of guilt by association to the other three sisters that were on her winning relay team. (Did they all really give those medals back?).
Anyway, for disgracing her country and the very idea of fair play in the Olympics Jones got six months. Plus she probably lost every lucrative endorsement deal in the pipeline (if she had any left). And when she gets out she is going to have a hard time living her behavior down.
Let’s contrast Jones’ jail time with that of Khloe Kardasian (sister of Kim who are both daughters of the late Robert Kardasian, O.J.’s attorney). I won’t even get into the fact that these chicks are somehow famous to some. Yet, it is obvious because when Khloe got picked for DUI and probation violation, she was sentenced to 30 days of jail time. We’ve all heard that she served a little over 3 hours. Is she somehow more famous than Marion Jones? I must be living on a different planet.
The truth is, however, that Khloe’s crimes could have left someone seriously injured or dead while Marion’s were more annoying and embarassing, but on an international level. I am not saying that Jones deserved a sentence similar to Khloe’s, but somehow it doesn’t feel like the two women are living in the same country. Jones pleaded with authorities not to be separated from her young children. Obviously, it was to no avail. Instead she should have made a deal for a hot reality television show and promised to move to Hollywood (and maybe given Tim Montgomery, her old flame and co-conspirator a role too). Then she too would have had an afternoon of inconvenience instead of a full six months.
