Sorry Oprah but yesterday I tuned into “Ellen” because Gabourey Sidibe from “Precious” was going to her one of her guests.(In a word: adorable.) But one of the other guests was Katie Couric who was talking about her desire to do more in-depth interviews on television and in print. She mentioned that her first sit-down as a new columnist for Glamour was with FLOTUS Michelle Obama. But I didn’t know until a few hours later that it was because The First Lady had been named one of the magazine’s Women of the Year. Yes, I know that our FLOTUS has been on tons of covers in the past 18 months or so but this is considered a high honor. Woo-Hoo goes right there.
(Personally I’m glad I found this story because the other option was yet another story on Kwame Kilpatrick—who’s suing Mike Stefani his whisteblower. Give me a break…) Anway, Mrs. Obama is being honored for her commitment to mentoring and exposing young girls to women who have excelled in a number of fields including business, science, sports and academia. She also encouraged women in the administration to step up to the plate and mentor themselves. The First Lady isn’t taking this honor lightly either. She said:
“I am delighted to join in celebrating the Glamour Women of the Year,” said
Mrs. Obama. “The women honored in this issue are changing the world for young
girls around the world by removing obstacles, opening doors, and reaching back
and extending a hand to the next generation of women leaders. They are role
models for us all.”
As for the interview, Couric covers more than Mrs. Obama’s commitment to helping young girls. She also talks to her about how she deals with criticism about her appearance (basically she just tries to be at peace with what she has on and knows she can’t control what other people think). How she stays sane (she makes herself as close to number 2 on the list as possible) as well as advice for women who are looking for Mr. Right (cute only lasts so long, look at the heart).
This cover is making news in other ways. Apparently The Reliable Source at the Washington Post said that Obama is the first non-model/entertainer to appear on the magazine’s cover since November 1996. Wow.
Here’s the not so great news: you’ll actually have to wait to November 10th to actually have a copy in your hands.
