After my post on the uptick on size bias last night (and the quandry a big-bone girl has when she loves her curves and wants to live a long life) I caught a glimpse of Queen Latifah’s latest commercial for Jenny Craig. Just looking at her, it is obvious that the pounds are coming off but she is adamant about keeping the focus on her health. After her People cover story last year about being 200 pounds and loving, Ms. Dana Owens doesn’t want to come out and change her tune. She will only say something like she is a ’size smarter’.
But the resulting commercials for Jenny Craig are just plain strange. Remember the first one when she’s walking down the street and people yell out, “good for you.” Then there is the one where she passes on the news that losing 10% of one’s body weight can dramatically improve your heath while she walks around a loft-like set. I for one much prefer the Kirstie Alley/Valerie Bertinelli style of spot where they actually tell you how much they lost. Queen Latifah is losing too, she just doesn’t want to say. My advice is take a page out of Star Jones’ book and do you. If weight loss is what you need to do then stop beating around the bush. Of course it will make you healthier too and if that’s your point don’t be ashamed to say it’s a 2-for1 deal.
