Comic Steve Harvey must be flying high these days. His relationship book “Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man” (co-written with my girl Denene Milner) has held the coveted top spot on The New York Times bestseller list for months. He’s been a guest on Oprah’s couch not just once but twice— dispensing relationship advice to women of ages and ethnicities. Now, the book has been optioned for film adaptation by Screen Gems. Should we be excited? Sorry, I can’t say that I am.
While I have skimmed the book I never felt the need to read it cover to cover and quote from it like the Bible like some of his most ardent fans. Somehow all those marriages and rumors about how Harvey himself has conducted himself in his personal relationships have given me pause. Sure, they may be untrue but it does at the very least put up a big caution sign. But if his advice is actually helping some women I can’t totally hate on that, I just choose not to rely on it myself.
But back to the movie. I sort of look at this adaptation as a black version of “He’s Just Not That Into You”. That film was quite successful ($93 million at the box office) because it assembled an ensemble of impressive names like Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore. I can’t help thinking that Harvey’s adaptation won’t aim so high with its casting. Particularly because he’s partnered with Will Packer who produced “Obsessed”. People loved that movie for its chick fight scene not its retread story or stellar acting ensemble (sorry Idris).
But it will be a minute before we see how this film shapes up. In the meantime, here’s my advice to Harvey. Get a sister involved in this production on a high level (it just might help).

I think it remains to be seen. Maybe it took him 49 years to figure out that he was mistaken in his personal life and this is his way of repenting. I too have not read the book but only skimmed it because it seems too much like common sense. Men are pretty simple we will only rise to the bar that the sister sets. That’s it in a nutshell. BTW that fight scene is as Oscar eligible as Halle’s Monster Ball.
Can the sisters get some respect???
