The Chris Brown & Rihanna Saga Continues…

We thought that we might get some answers yesterday on what really happened between Chris Brown and Rihanna on the night before the Grammy Awards.  But we’ll have to wait yet another month for that (at the very least.) Sure Brown showed up at the appointed time but TMZ reported that his court appearance was over in 4 minutes and 20 seconds—just long enough to get a one month delay. Plus he didn’t even enter a plea. Rihanna wasn’t there (no surprise) but was it disheartening to hear that although an Emergency Order of Protection was issued in the wake of the incident, her lawyer stated that she had no Protection Order in place now. Yeah, I know they are back together (engaged or even married according to some reports) but it is still sobering to watch this turn of events. It’s also quite sad.

I find this all quite unsettling because reading the police affadavit of the alleged assault makes things pretty plain and gives Brown no good reason to smile. But he has been anyway. If the reports are to be believed, this was a beat down of horrendous proportions which got worse when Brown thought Rihanna had called police. And apparently, there are photos far worse than the one we’ve all seen. Still Brown doesn’t look scared, instead he seems to be taking a page out of the R. Kelly playbook: stall at all costs and neutralize any damage that can be caused by the supposed victim.

But what is even sadder is as this story continues to be fodder for every gossip medium around, a lot of young black girls who are Chris Brown fans continue to come down firmly on his side. And Rihanna has sent them a signal, if she has indeed reconciled with him, that all a man has to do is apologize and everything is fine.  I am not blaming these young girls because grown women are sometimes just as bad. Some of us are more interested in the star than his alleged crime. Or think that sometimes women “deserve” it. Remember the sisters who chanted “Free R. Kelly” at the courthouse? Or those die-hard Michael Jackson fans during his trial? Then there were those sisters who clapped when Sanaa Lathan’s character got slapped so hard she flipped over the counter in “The Family That Preys” (I am still not sure why Tyler Perry did that).

So I am bringing this up  to say that we need to be clear where we stand on the issue of domestic violence and other crimes against women and girls. If we’re unclear, so are our daughters.

I generally agree with what has been stated in your article, Corynne. However, one thing I think is generally being over shadowed, is that Chris Brown has a serious problem. It seems as though, Chris Brown is being let “off-the-hook”, while people pity, and even worse, criticize Rihanna. Let’s never forget, Rihanna is the VICTIM here. I think people should focus more on the fact that Chris Brown has a serious problem, and men (and very rarely women), that are currently abusers, or have been the abusers in the past, should look at this situation in relation to their own lives. I hope this story will help facilitate the discussion on domestic violence, with a specific focus on the abusers. While the victims are undoubtebly suffering, it’s the abusers who are often let off the hook, it happens entirely too often, and needs to stop.

  2. Corynne Says:

Rachel, I totally agree that Chris Brown has a problem. I don’t think a duet or a reconciliation should get him off the hook. But although Rihanna is definitely a victim she has made a possible scary choice if she stays with this man. And she isn’t the only victim that has chosen that route either. I just hope that in time she decides that love doesn’t equal bodily harm.

  3. Jennifer Says:

I find it amazing that people still find it so easy to judge others. No one was there to say anything about the situation. To Rachel, statistically men get beaten more than women. Women report it more than men because men are more embarrassed by this than women. I have done countless research and reports on this sort of thing to know. Anyway, I think that the public should have made examples out of the older celebrities that beat their spouses and then maybe we wouldn’t have this situation going on now. I find it funny who the media, so-called justice system, and the public pick and choose who should and should not pay for the things that they have done when they all should. Hey that’s just me. All I can say for both is may God be with them.

I can’t say I blame his method of control with this. I’m sure he has a team of “image consultants” to help him along. I can rarely, if ever condone, the abuse of women, especially our black women who seem to get be abused more than others. My grandma told me if I ever hit a woman, she’d disown me. I rather walk away from any situation than loose my grandma dukes.

  8. Brianna Says:

i Personally think rihanna ddeserved it because if chris was a female and she hit her and snatched her keys out of the car and threw them out of the window i would of punched her in the face too. Chris is a man in this siatuation and the media does NOT see every thing he sees for all we know Rihanna could of been pushing him to beat her ass at home or something then one day he finally snapped and beat the fuck out of her. However if this is not Rihanna’s fault, which i doubt, then Chris sexy self should suffer the consiquences and Rihanna should own up to what she did and he should own up to what he did.
