Sisters in the spotlight are fashionable— this is evident when we see the red carpet. But what about our Black men? Well, there are some fashionable Black men out there who are representing too. And as Black women, we like to see a little bit of eye candy every once in a while, right?
Take a look at sexy newcomer, Ryan Leslie. He dresses simply, but his style gives off a casual yet sophisticated vibe. The Harvard-educated brother’s music also reflects his style—original. Not everyone can wear a salmon-colored plaid shirt and jeans. But obviously RLes knows what looks good on him. And as he says in his song “Never Gonna Break Up”, ‘I get the finest clothes I can find on retail.’ We hear you Ryan!
Despite his erratic behavior, Mr. Kanye West has style too. This dude takes risks and pulls it off every time. You may catch him drawing us in with hot green pants with a white T-shirt and a sweater, and pairing it with white tennis shoes. Or you can see him sporting jeans, with a white collard shirt topping it with a hot brown blazer. Speaking of blazers, they tend to be THE accessory for a man’s ensemble, especially when they’re with jeans a nice shoes. In this particular photo of West, he’s wearing a black and white pin-stripe suit and a broken-heart pin, I’m guessing in a nod to his latest album “808″s & Heartbreak”.
Collegiate Cardigans have also been a fashion forward accessory. It doesn’t seem to be heading in the fad category. Possibly, a becoming a necessity like jeans. Common is another brother who takes great pride in what he wears out the door. Here he is rocking gray jeans, a grey cardigan over a white collard shirt and tie. How classic and sexy is that?! Most recently, Terrence Howard co-hosted “The Soul Train Awards”, in which he wore a pin-stripe, blue suit with brown and tan shoes. Can someone say, GQ?
Last and certainly not least, I’d like to call this person the Fashion Forward King. Mr. Fonzworth Bentley, the cool outrageous brother with uniquely raw style has revamped the way men should look, especially with his classic, 40s-inspired suits. Bentley is known for his risk-taking colors such as the ensemble he wore at “The Soul Train Awards”. Now who else can wear a turquoise blue blazer over a light blue collard shirt and rock it, with a Gumby-inspired fade other than Bentley himself. This sophisticate released a book in 2007 called “Advance your Swagger; How to use, Manners, Confidence and Style to Get Ahead,” so this is a lifestyle for him not a statement. Love it!
