OK , Natural sista’s!! This one’s for you! You asked…
We all have choices. Whether we choose to live life with a relaxer or texturizer or go natural, it doesn’t determine who we are. It’s just how we like to see ourselves. So lets talk about those of us who choose to stick closer to our natural texture. So for those of you unsure, your hair is naturally curly. Tight or loose curls all curls need moisture! Moisture, moisture and more moisture. Moisture is our friend not humidity.
With that said, those of us with natural hair should not use detergents on it. At least not on a regular basis. Like our faces, natural hair needs fewer chemicals that dry out our natural oils. We should cleanse our hair as we cleanse our face. If you’re wearing your hair out and natural a few great cleansing products include Deva Curl No Poo (shampoo), Mixed Chicks Shampoo and Carol’s Daughter Khoret Amen Herbal Shampoo. Great Detangling and deep conditioners include Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner and Alterna Hemp Organics Color Hold (hair that is colored also needs lots of moisture). PLEASE NOTE LADIES. ONLY COMB YOUR HAIR WHEN ITS WET AND UNDER WATER!
Now that we understand a little more about our natural hair, please now that a leave-in conditioner is the answer to some of your prayers. My personal favorites; the Mixed Chicks Leave-in Conditioner and TIGI Bed Head’s Ego Boost. All leave-in conditioners are made to leave moisture in the hair. The lighter leave-ins for the summer and the heavier in the winter. Like any heavy leave-in, you can dilute the product to work best for you.
In past post I’ve talked about ladies who chose to wear their hair relaxed and what they can do for their hair at night. Maintenance of our natural locks are just as easy and almost the same. At night, natural sisters please do use a satin bonnet or the satin pillowcases. Lock the moisture in your hair at night. In the morning try using Mixed Chicks Hair Silk or Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk.

THANK YOU FOR THE EXCELLENT INFORMATION! After relaxing my hair for 30 years, I have decided to try my hand at going natural. Part of it was influenced by my 12 year old daughter who has beautiful ringlets all over her head. I was also influenced by one more bad perm that left my hair fried and broken right in the crown and down the middle of my head! I have gone about 4 months now and have about an inch and a half of new growth. I am totally in love with what is growing out of my scalp and cannot wait to cut the rest off!
Thanks for the tips!

There are plenty of products that work better than Mixed Chicks and Carol’s Daughter. Check out Motowngirls.com and do your own research and experiments on the products that work for your own hair type. Alot of the European brands work well to. Alot of times black folks use hair care products the way they consume a pair of designer jeans but all jeans are not made for every body type. More importantly hair care starts from the inside out so nutrition and exercise will have the most impact on the way your hair looks regardless if it’s relaxed or natural.

I only have one question why is this articled tagged with high maintenance? Other great products for natural hair include Oyin Handmade products (black owned) and Anita Grant products based in the UK but she ships internationally (also black owned).

Tamara,
You are reading the tag wrong. The blog is tagged “hair” not “high”

I WANTED TO KNOW THE BEST PRODUCTS TO USE FOR MY NATURAL HAIR. I WANT TO COVER THE GREY AND MAINTAIN MY HAIR BECAUSE I AM IN THE MIDDLE OF GOING NATURAL SO THE PERM IS STILL WORKING ITS WAY OUT?

Well, Lori, you can use henna (black color) to attempt at covering the grey hair or use amla hair oil by Bio, not Dabur amla hair oil b/c theirs has mineral oil which clogs the scalp.
hope that works out for you.

I am looking for a product that I once purchased at a barber shop in Decatur GA
The product is Natural Hair Lifestyles Dandruff Proof Shampoo and
Natural Hair LIfestyles Dandruff Proof Scalp Treatment.
It is a great product; however, the barber shop no longer sells it and the phone # on the product is not in service.
Thanks Lisa

I’m natural going on 5 years, I’ve used mixed chicks and it did nothing for me. I like Aubrey Organic, Giovanni’s ( can get at Walmart) Miss Jessie’s, Kinky Curly, Neturagena Triple Moisture Therapy, and Infusium 23. I had to do allot of trail and error to see what works best for my hair.

Actually, MIZANI has just come out with a line of products that focuses on "ethnic" hair, and it includes tons of mosturizers and specialized shampoos/conditioners. I'm about to go off to college and I know I won't be able to afford pressing my hair every two weeks by the hair dresser's so I'm trying to go all natural. I'll let you know in a couple months how it all worked out (I'l be trying it out over the summer)
