Okay, so I actually made it through the 2-hour premiere of The Biggest Loser Couples. It wasn’t hard because the show was packed with drama of every stripe. Watching Jerry, the oldest contestant, fall out after the first unsupervised workout (that wasn’t all that strenuous) was frightening. If something went seriously wrong, I wonder if the show would have continued business as usual? Makes you wonder, huh? Anyway, I think the first weigh-in was scary in a different way. Not only do you have to have weight blasted in front of America but it is combined with your partner. That made for some substantially high numbers.
Nicole and Damien came in at 650 pounds. That reality caused her to confess that she had been faking the funk about her life for sometime. Hey, if you are going to go so far as to bare your weight on a reality show you may as well be honest about everything. So, good for you Nicole! That brings me to the other sisters on the show, Carla and Joelle. In their interview video at the top of the show they were giving us their best diva fierceness—even striking some poses. But then their combined weight logged in as 688 pounds. Host Allison Sweeney then tells Carla “At 379 pounds you are the heaviest female contestant on The Biggest Loser.” Ugh. (The Brown and Orange teams come in at the heaviest, 818 and 847 pounds, respectively.)
Okay, so then all the craziest training ensues (I guess working someone so hard to the point of vomiting is the norm) and the 11 teams participate in that immunity challenge. The Black team prevails. Then a little later, this give us the big twist: no one is being eliminated. (Pregnant pause with appropriate music and of course a commercial break). However, only the immune team and the team who lost the highest percentage of weight will stay intact. Nine people, one from each team, will go home.
I know that this big twist will make for good television, however, I tuned in to see my friends (both of them). l’m rooting for Carla too, because if she’s determined she could not only be the biggest woman but she can also log the biggest weight loss in the show’s history. But frankly, I’m worried that Joelle is staying and Carla went home (hopefully she’s continuing the program at home). Why? Joelle, as Bob pointed out, is more talk than action. She logged the lowest weight loss of all the contestants (but more than I could ever lose in a week so I’m not hating). Carla is going to hold her friend accountable because she fully expects to return in 30 days (and if I were you Joelle, I wouldn’t want to disappoint her).
Anyway, that brings us back to the Red Team. Nicole went home while Damien stayed. How cute was it that this will be the longest that they’ve been apart since they met. I’m counting on absence making the heart grow fonder and the competitive spirit fiercer so they can be reunited.
