A New Ailey Revelation: Barbie

Tags: , , ,

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre has done a lot of great things to celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. Some of the highlights included a performance of one of their signature pieces “Revelations” at Harlem’s historic Abyssinian Baptist Church during Sunday service and an exhibit highlighting the dance company’s history at The Library of Congress Galleryin Washington, DC. They will partner with Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln during their legendary run at City Center in December.

All this is great news for those of us who get the opportunity to watch the troupe perform. If dance is your thing, it is especially nice to see folks that look like us showcase a variety of dance styles. It is especially important for our young girls to see life’s possibilities as demonstrated through the arts. But we all know that everyone doesn’t get the chance to see Ailey. That’s why I am happy to hear about this new partnership between Mattel and Alvin Ailey.

The Ailey Barbie is outfitted in the same costume the female members of the troupe wear during “Revelations,” and was designed by the one and only Judith Jamison. Most toy store won’t get this doll until December but Target will start selling it this Sunday.

If you have a young girl in your life that like’s to dance go out and get it. Get even if you don’t I am sure that it will be a collector’s item (at least for us). With it you pay homage to the spirit of possibilities in us all.
