We already know that a ticket to an Alicia Keys concert can be hard to come by—she sells out venues all over the country. But some lucky students will have the chance to not only hear this incredibly talented sister sing a few songs, she’ll also talk. Keys has embarked on a college lecture tour so students will actually get a chance to get a little more up close and personal with her than say most of us sitting in Radio City Music Hall.
Keys’ lecture tour, of course, coincides with the release of her fifth album “The Elements of Freedom” which is due to hit shelves next month (and the tour bears the same name too). Anyway, according to CNN she’s already done her thing at New York University. (Officials give students vouchers to avoid crashers—I wonder how that worked?). But Keys was hyped about being at NYU because much of her audience was made up of performing arts students.
“I’m loving this tonight [that] we’re here at NYU,” Keys says. “I’ve always, always, always wanted to come to colleges. … These are some very creative young people out there, and I want to reach out to them and share some of my story and hear some of their questions and really be able to start a dialogue.”
For most of us this expanded vision of communication comes as no surprise. Keys could never be lumped in with ‘girl’ singers warbling mindless pop tunes. Her music has made us think and feel something (even when it makes us feel like dancing). But on some level she’s always let the music speak for her. But this move shows she’s growing too—sharing more of herself by revealing her thoughts about the creative process (and encouraging those who are coming behind her). Keys continue to show us what a class act looks like.
