It is clear that many in our community hold up the marriage of the President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama as a strong example of black love. Like other Presidents, their marriage is often analyzed and speculated about but unlike other Presidents and their wives the Obamas have been more candid about their ups and downs. Even if you don’t do the Sunday paper anymore you might want to get yourself a copy of The New York Times Magazine this weekend so you can keep a hard copy of Jodi Kantor’s in-depth interview (curl up with a cup of coffee long) with the couple about their marriage. Because while this story is inspiring it is also a reality check about what it really takes (and I’m sure they’re not even telling us everything) to have a strong relationship. Read the full story

As President Barack Obama comes close to completing his first 100 days in office this Wednesday, the 100 day hustle has officially begun. By that I mean that political pundits, pollsters and cultural observers alike are all trying to give their spin on the President’s progress thus far. So it is no surprise that today’s New York Times has the results of a poll conducted by the Grey Lady herself and CBS news. Their findings? The survey says that in his short time in office our President has managed to move the conversation on race in this country in a positive direction. Really? Read the full story

Watching our President explain what our country needs to get out of current economic state last night only made it clear to me how right Barack Obama is for our country at this time. But my heart skipped a beat a little when he told the story of Ty’Sheoma Bethea, a 14-year-old junior high school student from Dillon, South Carolina. Ty’Sheoma showed the nation (heck, the world) the indomitable spirit of a black girl. We press on when others think we should stop. Read the full story
