Tuesday’s historic election of Barack Obama as the nation’s 44th President has been eclipsed, in many circles, by the growing discussion about Michelle Obama’s dress. Really. The dissection of her decision to don the red and black Narciso Rodriguez number started on fashion blogs like style.com and then to newspapers like USA Today. Now the talk has gone international. The UK’s Telegraph has picked up the story today. Overall, the reviews were not good. Read the full story

This is definitely an historic day–and one I will definitely tell my future grandchildren about one day. What I will tell them is that after ensuring my ballot was cast, I went to get my hair done before going to work. This day is historic for two reasons, I not only was able to vote for the first African-American President but it was also the first, ever, Dress Down Day at Black Enterprise. Mr. Graves graciously provided us with part of our attire, our “Yes We Must” t’shirt emblazoned with Barack Obama’s picture. Read the full story

We all know what duties the President of the United States has to fulfill, but First Lady of The United States (FLOTUS), not so much. There’s no doubt that we’re calling on both the spiritual and practical might of our people to elect Barack Obama, but if he is elected Michelle Obama will have a task ahead of her carving out her role as FLOTUS. The news earlier this week that model and reality show creator turned talk show host, Tyra Banks, will grace the September cover of Harper’s Bazaar posed as Michelle Obama sort of stunned me. I guess that was the point. What better way to draw attention to the new season of The Tyra Banks Show than to stir up publicity and controversy all at once. Read the full story

I can’t say I am surprised that The New Yorker chose to depict Barack Obama as a flag-burning Muslim. Even if the editor David Remnick thinks its satire the message goes over folk’s head. I was watching a CNN report on the elections on Friday where a reporter went around to various cities to take the pulse of its citizens about the candidates. His last stop left Campbell Brown, the reporter and the audience stunned into silence. Here’s what happened: The reporter asked the older white woman why has a life-long Democrat she’s decided to vote for McCain. Her reply was “Because I think he’s a Muslim.” The jaw-dropping statement came from her male friend who said that he doesn’t think a black man could make change. That is, unless he has a cup in his hand.

Now that Wrightgate is in the past, those hoping to steer Barack Obama off course are once again turning to his wife, Michelle. Our girl is seriously under scrutiny because folks are looking for a crucial misstep they can latch on to derail this campaign. If they could do it before Denver, spectacular (then Hillary will all of a sudden be the nominee). Read the full story

Without realizing it, Michelle Obama is going to take the angry black woman discussion global. I don’t believe that Michelle is an angry black woman. In fact, she is like many of us, confident, strong and opinionated and she isn’t about to apologize for who she is. But I have noticed that the world doesn’t know what to make of a strong black woman. If we speak too directly, we are immediately labeled as angry, tough or as a woman with an ‘attitude’. And if we don’t feel like smiling, well forget about it! (Yeah, I know, sometimes we do have an attitude but doesn’t everybody?) Read the full story
