Photos: Brothers & Sisters at the Golden Globes

Besides Mo’Nique’s big win (the first of the night) and heartfelt acceptance speech, there was a scarcity of people of color crossing the stage at the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards. In spite of the rain (which is not a black woman’s friend) brothers and sisters did brave the red carpet.

Leona Lewis “Echo”

At first glance, UK pop vocalist Leona Lewis, strikes me as a Mariah Carey wannabe. But her “True Colors” duet with Cyndi Lauper on “VH1’s Divas” was inspired (but she still has earned the title ‘diva’ yet) . Plus her latest single “Happy” is quite catchy. Today her sophmore CD, Echo ($13.98) hits the stores and  it’s a bit of a mixed bag. So what do I like? The ballads like “Can’t Breathe,” “My Hands” and “Broken” work. I’m less excited about her dance tunes—which are fine but they  don’t distinguish Lewis as anyone special (at least in my opinion).  So should you get it? If you loved “Spirit” go for it. Otherwise, take a listen to the tracks to see if you want to try it yourself.

“Precious” Will Take You On A Rollercoaster Ride (And It’s Worth It)

So the much talked about film “Precious” finally opens in select cities today (then rolls out across the country over the next couple of weeks). I’m sure a lot of folks are probably saying finally because this flick has been hyped since January when it premiered at Sundance and blew those in attendance away. That is  certainly a long lead time but I’m here to say that the film definitely lives up to all the hype. Read the full story

Mimi’s Big Day

mariah-carey

Yesterday was a big day for Mariah Carey. She took a field trip to Macy’s to show support for her new fragrance, “Forever”", while her newest project “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel” hit the shelves. But this is just the beginning of Mariah’s busy fall between promoting her album, fragrance and her new movie, “Precious”, she’s going to be one busy woman.

Did Mariah Carey Sell Out?

I didn’t really think much about the fact that Mariah Carey pushed “Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel” back a few weeks. I just chalked it up to the possibility that she might not want to get lost in the Whitney Houston comeback hoopla. But there actually may be more to the story. It turns out that her first single, “Obsessed”—you know the one that’s supposed to speak to that ongoing feud about their real or imaginary relationship with Eminen—has failed to break the Top 10 in its first three weeks of distribution. According to Billboard the song had its highest ranking during its first week (Number 11) and then dropped to 20 and currently stands in the 17th spot. One blog reported that her diehard fans aka ‘the lambs’ has resorted to soliciting donations so they could purchase a lot of downloads and move her up on the charts. Not sure if it is true but it is nice to know that folks love her enough to talk about it. Read the full story

Why Don’t Songs By Sisters Hold A Bigger Place in History?

billboard-top-100-list-black-women-singers

I don’t think that any of us judge how successful a singer is by her place on the Billboard chart. In fact, most of us don’t know how hot someone is until they go platinum (or we’ve heard their single a million times and its repeats in our head over and over). But I was surprised when I took a look at Billboard’s list of the top 100 songs of the last 50 years and found only six sisters listed among all those slots. Sadder still, not one of our girls were among the top 20 album list by the magazine for the same time frame. Read the full story
