Howard Stern & The Audacity of Gabourey Sidibe

It was pretty obvious Gabourey Sidibe was having a great time at the Academy Awards on Sunday night. And besides the whole “if fashion were porn” or the occasional “I’d do him” comment caught by the cameras,  she was just a young, sister living a dream. And there’s nothing wrong with that. But we all know she’s not like the rest of Hollywood and sooner or later  somebody would say something about her size. Forgive the awful pun but it was the proverbial elephant in the room. I thought the first blow would come via Joan Rivers, but she was on her best behavior during the E Fashion Police recap show. (Although there was the comment made by one of the panelists that Queen Latifah knows how to dress for a ‘big’ woman or some other BS). While most of the media decided that politcal correctness was the route to take when it came to Sidibe, Howard Stern said PC be damned. So he brought the subject up on his show on Monday. And the thought just made me cringe before I even knew what he had to say. Read the full story

We may have only seen Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, Rihanna and Roberta Flack on stage but there were plenty of sisters in attendance at the Grammy Awards last night.

Baby I’m Back…

Jennifer Hudson has kept a pretty low profile and that’s understandable. But now she’s back on the scene in a big way. Last night she attended The Whitney Museum Gala in New York City. And then there’s that beautiful portrait of mom and baby in this week’s People. So happy to see Jennifer with a smile on her face.

Photos: VH1 Divas

Tags: , , , , , , ,

It looked like most divas (both on the stage and in the audience) would much rather keep it short, sassy and sexy then go for the traditional elegance. Here are some of the sisters who did it their way.

Is VH1 Stretching the Definition of Diva?

Tags: , , , , , ,

vh1-divas

Okay, this is not meant to be snarky but I am really scratching my head over the lineup VH1 has put together for the relaunch of their franchise “VH1 Divas”. Here’s the lineup: Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Leona Lewis and Jordin Sparks. Apparently you only need one or two albums to qualify—such is the case with Adele, Lewis and Sparks. Yes I know new mom JHud only has one CD too, but I think she’s in a different league (so is Kelly Clarkson). Hudson also has an Oscar, a Golden Globe award and a few Grammys. Even teens qualify. Frankly, it’s kind of confusing.  But a USA Today helped me understand what the network is trying to do. Apparently it is all about showcasing  a three-dimensional diva (I didn’t know they were one-dimensional before). Read the full story

Our favorite “Dreamgirl” has been wowing audiences in the cities she’s already visited on her tour with Robin Thicke. Tonight, she hits the stage at the Wamu Theater at Madison Square Garden. But if you act fast you may still be able to get tickets to that show as well as those cities that still have seats available this month : Norfolk (4/12), Charlotte (4/17) and Detroit (4/24). Click here for details.

NAACP Image Awards: From Muhammed Ali to Ming & Aoiki Lee Simmons

2009-naacp-image-awards

The NAACP Awards have always been a kind of quirky mixed bag that all the people of color in Hollywood show up for—happy, frankly that there is at least one organization that recognizes their work. But for this, the organization’s 100th anniversary, the bag was more mixed than ever before. Where else would a Nobel Prize winner and a former Vice President be honored at the same stage as a sitcom? Yes, I mean Dr. Wugari Maathai of the Green Belt Movement and Vice President Al Gore and Tyler Perry’s House of Payne. Read the full story

The Grammy Rollercoaster: Whitney, Jennifer, Rihanna and more…

Tags: , , , , , , ,

When I think of this year’s Grammy Awards I can’t help thinking of that Frankie Beverly & Maze classic “Joy & Pain.” Because it was certainly a night of mixed emotions when it comes to the sisters. Let’s start with the glaringly obvious one: the reason Rihanna may not have been there. First we heard that she had been in a car accident. But as the night wore on rumors began to speculate that something went on between the singer who was set to perform at the award show and her boyfriend, singer Chris Brown. TMZ reported that the young R&B singer turned himself in to police before the show wrapped. I am sure the truth about what really happened to them will materialize bit by bit. I will say however, if this is a case of domestic violence than this kid’s squeaky clean image should be over. Read the full story
