Why Does Strong=Angry When it Comes to Black Women?

Tags: ,

Without realizing it, Michelle Obama is going to take the angry black woman discussion global. I don’t believe that Michelle is an angry black woman. In fact, she is like many of us, confident, strong and opinionated and she isn’t about to apologize for who she is. But I have noticed that the world doesn’t know what to make of a strong black woman. If we speak too directly, we are immediately labeled as angry, tough or as a woman with an ‘attitude’. And if we don’t feel like smiling, well forget about it! (Yeah, I know, sometimes we do have an attitude but doesn’t everybody?)

I am rooting for Michelle because she isn’t about to back down. She is taking the world to school about a different kind of African American woman. She’s smart, educated, grounded and fiercely protective of her family. She will get angry if necessary but anger is not what fuels her life. Michelle is more transparent than say, Condoleeza Rice. She is showing herself and her passion in a very real way. The world may never look at a strong black woman the same way again.

Why do you think that strong=angry when it comes to us?
