Dear ABC Family.…Are you kidding me? You need to get real with “Lincoln Heights”. For those of you who haven’t seen it, “Lincoln Heights” is a show about a Black Los Angeles police officer, Eddie Sutton (Russell Hornsby), his nurse wife Jenn (Nicki Micheaux), and their three teenage children. The Sutton family moves from the suburbs back to the inner-city neighborhood where Eddie grew up. He faces the struggle to balance the safety and happiness of this family with his desire to change the neighborhood. It’s great to see a positive image of a Black family, besides The Cosby’s. Although “Lincoln Heights” has been on the air for four seasons, not a lot of people have seen it— three of the lead actresses were recently on “The Mo’ Nique Show”, saying that this was their first ever talk show appearance! Sad, yet not surprising. Besides reality buffonery, shows that are predominately black never receive as much publicity as other shows. Read the full story

This season, Mya has received standing ovations, rave reviews from Bruno and Carrie Ann, and she’s topped the leaderboard. But she has yet to impress “Dancing With The Stars’” toughest critic, Len. She’s received lackluster comments from Len for weeks, and he’s pushed her to rely more on technique and less on gimmicks. But on Monday night, Mya’s quickstep and samba won over her toughest critic. The judges unanimously praised Mya and Dmitry’s quick step, and Len’s only disappoinment was that he couldn’t find anything to criticize. The couple earned score of 29 and their first ten from Len. To celebrate the milestone, Dmitry presented Mya with a “10″ ring. Sigh. lucky girl. Read the full story

On Monday night, Mya not only got to show off her exquisite dance moves, she also got to be a fashion designer. She designed an elegant purple dress for herself, and a suit that made Dmitry look more beautiful, if that’s even possible. Mya and Dmitry performed a foxtrot with a special ode to the Hollywood stylings of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. The performance got the crowd to their feet, but failed to impress Len for another week. Bruno felt the foxtrot perfectly captured the Old Hollywood era, and said Mya looked like a dream and danced like an angel. Carrie Ann agreed with Bruno, and praised Mya for her elegance and precision on the dance floor. Read the full story

I am not sure that Barbara Walters could have ever imagined the current incarnation of “The View” as it is today. Initially, it was just a well-rounded cast that representated women of different age groups, ethnicities and opinions. But let’s face it, besides Star Jones and Walters herself, there wasn’t too much opinion going on—although Joy Behar was definitely good for a laugh or two. Enter Rosie O’Donnell and the opinion portion was like a runaway train that even Walters couldn’t keep from going off the rails. Walters turned to Whoopi Goldberg to get things back on track but I wonder if she knew that Whoopi was going to make “The View” into an unexpected treat—yes, even if Elizabeth Hasselback and Sherri Shepherd are in the mix. (Although Sherri doesn’t bug me as much as she used to.) Read the full story

Although Christian Bale is set to reboot the “Terminator” franchise in theaters any day now, Fox had decided to ax “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” the sort of midquel (okay that’s not a word) that follows John Conner in his teen years before he becomes the leader of the resistance —and sends one of his men back in time to warn Sarah. While the franchise is mildly interesting and Summer Glau, Shirley Manson and Lena Headley are some badass chicks, I really tuned in for one reason: Richard T. Jones. Read the full story

The relationship between black women and their hair is a loaded subject and it keeps coming up over and over again (especially during the last few weeks). That got me thinking about Melba Tolliver, who was a local reporter at WABC in New York back in the day. This sister made national news in the early 70s when she decided to start wearing her hair natural and got push back from the powers that be at her television station who tried to pressure her into wearing it straight (or to put on a wig or a scarf at the very least). Tolliver flatly refused (and was kept off the air for a time as a result). Read the full story

Last year, “All My Children” fans were all abuzz with the impending return of Angie and Jesse Hubbard. They were the biggest black love story daytime drama (soap operas) had in the 1980s. Come to think of it there really hasn’t been anything to rival it since. When the show decided to bring Jesse (Darnell Williams) back from the dead, the stage was set for a whopper of a reunion between him and Angie (Debbi Morgan). And it is for those shows that Morgan has received a much deserved nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress. Read the full story

After following most of the season on this blog I would be remiss if I didn’t check in with a recap of the finale. Granted, I stop posting after Nicole’s surprise return turned out to be a one-shot deal (there was no point after all the black folks were gone). Anway, I was glued to my set with my DVR recording the whole thing. (Note to NBC: 3 hours is overkill). I wanted to see how Nicole, Damien, Carla and Joelle did—and whether any of them would at least get a chance at the take home prize of $100 grand. Read the full story

Lil’ Kim left the competition last night, stunning the ballroom and tv viewers. Her scores from Monday’s performances left her near the bottom of the leader board. Visibly shocked, she held her head high and handled the news with grace. Her now good friend Derek Hough said he loved her, and that she was one of his favorite partners, before lifting her for one final spin on the dance floor. Read the full story

It was the gasp heard ‘round the world when Bruno, the always slightly inappropriate turned creepy leering judge shouted after Lil’ Kim’s waltz: “You try to be a lady, but you’re more comfortable being a tramp!” Read the full story
