I don’t care if Bourbon Street looks pretty much the same and they’ve rebuilt the Shops at Canal Place, the City of New Orleans has NOT recovered from the most devasting natural disaster it has ever faced. We’re headed towards the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina yet a large number of homeowners are still in what can only be described as a vicious holding pattern. Now The New York Times has reported that FEMA has told thousands of folks living in trailers and other temporary housing that they need to get out by the end of this month—even if they don’t have anywhere else to go. Most of those impacted are old, disabled or mentally ill…Sheesh. Read the full story

The Kwame Show Continues….Sigh

Tags: , , , ,

kwame-kilpatrick-case

You’d think that disgraced former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick would keep a low profile for a little while after he got out of jail. (Christine Beatty sure has.) But that’s not going to happen. Instead, this brother continues to use faulty reasoning to explain his bad behavior. Here’s a hint: Kwame, so far it hasn’t work. And although he may not be able to hold public office for a while he still seems to keep his name and face in the spotlight. Read the full story

When White Women Become Experts on Michelle Obama’s (And Our) Hair

Tags: , , , , , , ,

Yesterday, on the HuffingtonPost.com Gioia Diliberto attempted to analyze FLOTUS Michelle Obama’s hair during her first 100 days in The White House. Diliberto is a journalist, but a few interviews doesn’t make her an expert on black hair. She can only make observations, but those of us who’ve  lived with our tightly wound kinks and curls (whether we straighten them or not) know that the relationship we have with our hair can only  best be explained through experience. Michelle Obama Is In Charge (Of Her Image)

Tags: , , , ,

more-magazine-michelle-obama-cover

During the first 100 days of President Obama’s administration folks have been closely watching Michelle Obama to see exactly what kind of First Lady she will become. Since she is a smart woman, she knows that. But for the most part, critics have been distracted by her clothing—wasting oodles of space dissecting each and every ensemble. True what she wears is important to Michelle Obama, however, clothing is just one of the ways the First Lady has been carefully crafting her image. Read the full story

Beyond Belief! Talk Show Host Calls Michelle Obama Trash!

Tags: , , ,

michelle-obama-tammy-bruce

We have already seem all kinds of bad behavior and boundary violations regarding our President and First Lady. But things are just getting out of hand. The most recent example of this comes from a woman named Tammy Bruce–who used her stint as a fill-in for conservative talker Laura Ingraham to catapult herself to noteriety with some truly offensive words. Circle of Sisters (The Presidential Edition)

Tags: , , , , , ,

Condoleezza Rice’s years in the White House were pretty lonely if she was ever in search of some sisterly support. Sure she had her good friend George W. but that can’t rival being able to let her hair down (if she actually would) with her girls. Not so for the black woman who hold high level posts in the Obama administration. Krissah Thompson’s Washington Post piece draws a compelling portrait of sisters getting and giving support (not tearing each other down or ignoring one another) in the Obama administration. Isn’t that refreshing? Read the full story

Why Michelle Obama’s Arms Inspire Fear

Tags: , , , , ,

michelle-obama-arms

Before the Obama’s moved into The White House we knew that The First Lady was going to be a target for haters. But the reaction to Michelle Obama’s arms is downright mind-boggling and dare I say ridiculous. (It is bad enough that her posterior was a topic of discussion a few months back.) Depending upon who you ask, her well-sculpted biceps are either awe-inspiring or very scary—and not because one has to be dedicated to a gym routine to get results like hers. Read the full story

That Black Girl of the Week: Marian Wright Edelman

Tags: , , ,

marian-wright-edelman

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of hearing the great Marian Wright Edelman speak. The founder and President of The Children’s Defense Fund recalled meeting the late Medgars Evers when he came to the airport and picked her up when she in the South working on behalf of the Civil Rights struggle. No pomp and circumstance just a man ready to do work. After dining with Evers and his family, Evers drove Wright Edelman to her destination and stayed with her. Those are the kind of stories we don’t get to hear anymore. Those of the kind of stories future generations need to hear Read the full story

Ty’Sheoma Bethea: The Letter That Impacted A Nation

Tags: , , , , ,

tysheoma-bethea

Watching our President explain what our country needs to get out of current economic state last night only made it clear to me how right Barack Obama is for our country at this time. But my heart skipped a beat a little when he told the story of Ty’Sheoma Bethea, a 14-year-old junior high school student from Dillon, South Carolina. Ty’Sheoma showed the nation (heck, the world) the indomitable spirit of a black girl. We press on when others think we should stop. Read the full story

Kwamegate Part 75: The Former Mayor Gets Out of Jail

Tags: , , ,

kwame-kilpatrick-freed-2

Disgraced and dethroned former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick emerged from a Wayne County Jail in the wee hours of the morning today after serving 99 days there. Like other people of note, he stopped just short of serving the entire 120 day sentence. Waiting for him was a throng of press and his new attorney Willie Gary (the brother is known for winning big for his clients). Read the full story
