We’ve heard a lot of stories about Whitney Houston once she finally broke free of her toxic relationship with Bobby Brown. We’re all relieved that she got the help she needed are hoping against hope that rehab stuck with her. But since she went back in the studio last year we’ve heard reports both good and back about the singer’s much anticipated comeback. Read the full story

You’re probably wondering why I would write a post about Mama Mia on a site dedicated to sisters. Well, as I sat in the movie theater the other day watching the delightful Meryl Streep sing and dance her way through this story I thought to myself. “This could never be a black story.” Why? Well, its the plot. Young girl is getting married and finds out that her father could be one of three men. And that in itself is the cause for nearly two hours of singing and dancing. As Steve Harvey says, “Stop right there!” Read the full story

Just in time for the Olympics ESPN is reporting that Marion Jones wants a pardon from President Bush. Or at the very least, she wants her sentence commuted because she tested positive for performance enhancing drugs and participated in check fraud. Once dubbed the fastest woman in the world, this sister put every record she held in question. She also spread a bit of guilt by association to the other three sisters that were on her winning relay team. (Did they all really give those medals back?). Read the full story

Are you losing your hair and you don’t know why? Take a second and examine the hair that you see in the shower or in the comb/brush. There are generally two types of breakage: from the root and damaged hair. If it is from the root its internal. You can detect this type of breakage by white bulb at the end of the hair shaft. This can be caused by a variety of reasons: stress, change of eating habits, and change of medications including birth control. Read the full story

When Wendy Williams announced that she was doing a six-week trial run of a daily talk show, I was excited for her. As a native New Yorker I will never forget how she was unceremoniously booted off the air after allegedly calling a certain celebrity’s sexuality into question. But when I saw the first show, I was a little worried for her. The outlandish radio host seemed a bit like a fish out of water. And her hair was acting as a shield because it was difficult to see her face. Read the full story

When I was in grade school, I always had butterflies in my stomach on the first day. Why? Because I was worried the teacher was going to butcher my name during roll call. I’m sure some of you can relate. You always knew when your name was about to be called because the teacher takes a long pause, and then there’s a look of panic on their face before saying, “Um…now, I hope I get this right…” Teachers called me “New-by-uh,” “Nuhh-be-ah,”and even “New-bah (totally forgetting the fact that there is an “I” before the “A” in Nubia). Giggling in the classroom always surmounted while I raised my hand, and said, “It’s Nubia (new-be-uh).” Read the full story

If you read this blog from time to time you know I often bring up the lack of quality roles for black actresses on both the big and large screen. Well, a few sisters that are working in television are turning in stellar performances—and they’re hard work is actually being recognized. That’s why six sisters have been nominated for Emmy Awards. I can’t recall a time when so many of us have gotten the nod at one time. No, you can’t count the NAACP Image Awards. Read the full story

A few months ago, Entertainment Weekly’s story about the upcoming fall season revealed that the only new black character would be Cleveland Brown, the star of the new Family Guy spin-off called Cleveland (which actually won’t debut until next year). But Mike Henry, who originated the role and is not black would supply his voice. I don’t remember any big protests about this but rather there was more concern about the lack of real black characters in prime time television. But perhaps Fox thought it would be easier to address the ethnic diversity of this show rather than actually casting actors we could see on any of its new projects. That said, I am glad to hear that Sanaa Lathan will be the voice of Cleveland’s wife, Donna and Nia Long will lend her pipes to the rebel in the family, stepdaughter Roberta. Read the full story
