Hair Lessons We Can Learn From the BET Awards

Tags: , , , , ,

I know you saw the BET awards last week…WOW!!!!  It  was both good and bad, especially the hair.
The BET awards are the place where all the black entertainers and wanna-be black entertainers strut their stuff with fabulous clothes, makeup and hair.  This year we saw a lot of quick hair changes.  Some cute and others all I can say is …WHY?

Gladiator Sandals: Worth the Hype?

Tags: ,

We’ve just officially hit summer but it’s already clear what this season’s fashion winner is–the gladiator sandal. Last year I couldn’t walk two steps without seeing a Tory Burch flat, but those have since fallen to the wayside. Which leads me to wonder if this new trend (which I call the Roman Redux) is worth buying into? I must say, my first thought was that these were pretty hideous, I couldn’t shake the mental images of the twelve disciples. Then I began seeing different versions of the shoe that were more my style, and there I found myself, sucked in. The key to keeping this style around for more one summer, is versatility. Read the full story

Do You Remember The Time?

Tags: , ,

Yes, there are the lyrics of one of Michael Jackson’s hits but I am literally asking whether you remember the group, Morris Day and The Time. Earlier this year they created buzz by appearing on The Grammy’s and now they are really back together and trying to make a comeback. They’ll be  appearing at the Flamingo Hilton in Las Vegas for two runs this summer. The same city Prince caused a stir with his limited run a couple of years ago. Read the full story

Keyshia Cole’s Sour Note on the BET Awards

Tags: , , , , ,

Okay, I am forcing myself to sit and watch the BET Awards and it is really painful (as all award shows are). The corny writing that takes a stab at witty banter is killing me.

Of course the young folks they have stationed near the stage seemed to be enjoying themselves but when the camera panned the audience they looked kind of dumbfounded. Kanye (and one or two other people) were standing in support. Everyone else was stunned into disbelief (at least that is what it looked like to me).

Come on Keyshia, you’ve got to admit you had an off night. I refuse to believe you are one of those singers who can’t deliver the goods live. Plus, I watched your reality show once so I can’t help but root for you. But girl, you have got to do better.

Contrast her performance with Alicia Keys who clearly prepared. She got everyone on her their feet before she the girl groups came out. SWV looked a little tentative (but two of them haven’t performed in a while), En Vogue came out strong and TLC held it down. Keyshia, I hope you were taking notes. This is how a sister is supposed to represent.

Whoopi, What Are You Thinking?

Tags: , ,

I just turned to The View, which is live from Las Vegas and I was immediately struck by Whoopi Goldberg’s outfit. How can I describe it? Long loose top over baggy shorts with a her locks cascading out of a sun visor and sneakers. It makes me think that she was in a hurry this morning because her proportions were way off making her look like a blob of fabric with legs sticking out. But on second thought, I believe she is making her own kind of fashion statement. Or should I say anti-fashion statement? Read the full story

Weave Warning #1: Watch Those Edges

Tags: , , ,

Within the last week and especially these last two days I’ve come across a serious issue within the community.  It’s a growing concern.  I want to save all of you weave wearers from the “loss of edges” due to improper care of edges, as well as improper weaves.

People All Over the World: Can Soul Train Really Make a Comeback?

Tags: , ,

When I was growing up Soul Train was the only real option for us. On Saturdays, me and my sisters would gather around the television waiting to see who was coming on to sing. We also oohed and aaahed over the fashion and saw how easy the Soul Train Scramble Board was even as children. Today’s  New York Times reports that Mr. Love, Peace and Soul himself, Don Cornelius sold the 38-year old brand to a production company called MadVision Entertainment. Did you know that it was still on the air? Apparently, it is, albeit in the best of form. The Soul Train Awards became sort of sad when the award winners didn’t show up in recent years.
